Case Study: Safeguarding Power Plant Transmission Operations

Gaven Industries – Leading the Way in Shielded Structure Integration

Gaven Industries, a renowned supplier of High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding and protections, partnered with the general contractor and design-build firm, Paric, for a large, groundbreaking power station project in the Midwest United States. For this newly built transmission operations control center (TOCC), Gaven Industries embarked on a comprehensive consultation and design process that lasted several months. As market-leading providers and integrators in Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), and Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) shielding and point of entry (POE) protections, Gaven Industries leveraged nearly 40 years of shielding experience to deliver unmatched performance in an end-to-end HEMP-protected shielded volume.

Covering an area of approximately 60,000 ft², the utility’s data center required MIL-STD 188-125-1 compliant HEMP protection for TOCC facilities occupying over 30,000 ft² of space. From the initial stages of virtual design coordination (VDC), Gaven Industries played an instrumental role in evaluating critical systems and specifying the precise shielding requirements. Gaven’s shielding expertise provided invaluable guidance on the layout and configuration of the building, ensuring optimal protection. For the shield, Gaven engineered a pre-fabricated method by creating a panelized metal solution for all 6 sides of the Faraday cage design. These pre-fabricated panels are built and shipped in sequence, minimizing construction time on site. The installation process adhered to the detailed plans and schedule meticulously created by Gaven Industries.

All POE’s for the shielded volume were designed and installed by Gaven as well. These included dozens of Gaven-designed Air Seal doors, waveguides, and filters. Gaven Industries also specified and installed over 50 HEMP filters, ranging from 32A units to custom 3600A units. This encompassed the provision of termination enclosures and connection hardware to ensure a comprehensive shielding solution. Post-installation, Gaven Industries conducted all necessary HEMP performance validation testing, ensuring the effectiveness of the shielding system. Additionally, Gaven developed a robust hardness maintenance/hardness surveillance (HM/HS) plan for ongoing facility use. This plan guarantees that the originally installed shielding components receive the necessary care and maintenance to maintain their effectiveness and protect against electromagnetic threats year after year.

With a team of 90 skilled professionals and a manufacturing facility spanning over 50,000 ft², Gaven Industries offers an array of standard and custom solutions to safeguard against electromagnetic threats. Our clientele ranges from the Department of Defense, government agencies, and critical infrastructure entities to the Department of Homeland Security. The long-standing reputation of Gaven Industries as a reliable shielding provider was a key factor in their selection for this prestigious electrical utility project.

Refer to the attenuation characteristics charts to determine what material and cell size are right for your application.

Angle Frame:

  • This construction method typically involves a frame made of angled metal sections.
  • The frame is attached to the structure of the shielded enclosure, providing support for the waveguide material.
  • Angle frame construction is often used for installations where a rigid frame is required to maintain the shape and integrity of the waveguide panels.

Ducted:

  • Ducted waveguides are designed with a duct-like structure, allowing airflow to pass through the interior of the waveguide.
  • This construction method provides a pathway for air to flow while maintaining EMI/RFI shielding integrity.
  • Ducted waveguides are commonly used in HVAC systems where maintaining airflow is crucial, such as in data centers or industrial settings.

Ducted w/ Man Bars (Secure):

  • Ducted waveguides with man bars incorporate additional metal bars or grilles within the duct structure.
  • These man bars help to reinforce the waveguide and provide additional support for the ducted airflow.
  • This construction method is suitable for applications where increased structural integrity and security are required, such as in high-security environments or specialized industrial applications.
