What We Protect Against

Data Center Protection from Electromagnetic Vulnerabilities

Data centers are usually well-prepared for physical security risks, but they often overlook the immediate dangers posed by electromagnetic threats (E-threats). These threats can lead to Radiation-based Data Destruction (RBDD) and can severely damage data and hardware. While strategies such as geo-redundancy can provide some level of protection, they are not comprehensive enough to counteract the real-time threats of E-threats. To ensure robust protection, it’s necessary to take a stronger, proactive approach to electromagnetic shielding and continuous monitoring.

In the current high-stakes realm of critical computing, data theft occurs when bad actors illegally collect or manipulate data through radiated information. EMI shielding and RF shielding are crucial defenses in preventing such attempts, as they create a barrier to ensure that sensitive information remains secure within data center enclosures, even when commercially available interception equipment can capture data from afar.

In today's high-stakes world of critical computing, data theft is a real concern. This happens when bad actors illegally collect or manipulate data through radiated information. To prevent such attempts, EMI shielding and RF shielding are essential defenses. They create a barrier to ensure that sensitive information remains secure within data center enclosures, even when commercially available interception equipment can capture data from afar.

Data centers must now consider the risk of infiltration caused by conducted emissions, as they can travel through power and data lines, bypassing traditional EMI barriers. Gaven provides comprehensive solutions that include advanced filters and waveguides in data center enclosures, which prevent the re-radiation of EMI within shielded spaces. This significantly strengthens the security of critical computing environments.

Geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) caused by events like solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) pose a significant threat comparable to High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulses (HEMP). These disturbances can disrupt not only the Earth's magnetosphere but also the operational stability of data centers. Gaven's data center solutions address these natural and man-made electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources by employing large-scale shielding techniques, which mitigate interference and ensure uninterrupted operation of computing devices.

The complexity of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), whether caused by a high-altitude nuclear detonation (HEMP) or a non-nuclear source (NNEMP), demands advanced engineering solutions. Gaven specializes in Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency (RF) shielding, in addition to providing cutting-edge data center enclosures, to deliver comprehensive protection. This ensures that critical computing systems can endure the diverse waveforms and impacts caused by such events.

White Paper

EMP & IEMI Protection
Concepts for Data Centers

EMP, or High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (also “HEMP”), along with other electromagnetic threats, such as IEMI (collectively known as “E-Threats”), used to be the domain of the Department of Defense. It has become increasingly apparent that even for national defense purposes, civil infrastructure is critical to the efficient functioning of our national security. Therefore, the identification of critical data centers and applications within data centers bears increasing consideration for HEMP/IEMI mitigation and protection.

This white paper proposes several ideas and options to efficiently deliver HEMP/IEMI shielded data centers without the radical increase in costs over non-shielded facilities.

Shielded Containerized Data Center Units

Gaven’s HEMP-shielded Modular Enclosure System is a scalable, rapidly deployable system designed to shield structures or enclosures from high-altitude electromagnetic pulses. The system exceeds MIL-STD 188-125-1A/2 requirements and is easily transportable. The system consists of enclosures, clean-entry vestibules, and flexible connecting links. It can be used for workspaces, communications facilities, command facilities, data and computing centers, and operations centers.

Shielded Facilities & Rooms

When it comes to installing shielding for a facility, the traditional method of stick-building on-site can be both time-consuming and expensive. However, Gaven has developed a prefabricated system that integrates the shielding directly into the envelope of the facility. This means that once the facility’s envelope is complete, the shielding is also complete. To achieve this, steel-form tilt-up panels are used, which are familiar to many general contractors. The panels are welded together to create seams that integrate the shielding with adjacent walls, floors, and ceiling panels.

Refer to the attenuation characteristics charts to determine what material and cell size are right for your application.

Angle Frame:

  • This construction method typically involves a frame made of angled metal sections.
  • The frame is attached to the structure of the shielded enclosure, providing support for the waveguide material.
  • Angle frame construction is often used for installations where a rigid frame is required to maintain the shape and integrity of the waveguide panels.

Ducted:

  • Ducted waveguides are designed with a duct-like structure, allowing airflow to pass through the interior of the waveguide.
  • This construction method provides a pathway for air to flow while maintaining EMI/RFI shielding integrity.
  • Ducted waveguides are commonly used in HVAC systems where maintaining airflow is crucial, such as in data centers or industrial settings.

Ducted w/ Man Bars (Secure):

  • Ducted waveguides with man bars incorporate additional metal bars or grilles within the duct structure.
  • These man bars help to reinforce the waveguide and provide additional support for the ducted airflow.
  • This construction method is suitable for applications where increased structural integrity and security are required, such as in high-security environments or specialized industrial applications.
